.@elonmusk says that no one can name a person who died from his aid cuts. In fact, I've met the kids who are dying, and I've talked to the families who lost children. In my columns, I've cited many, many names of people who have died because of Musk's aid cuts. A few examples:
*Yamah Freeman was a 23-year-old woman who died in childbirth because Musk cut funding for the diesel for ambulances in her part of Liberia. She couldn't get to a hospital and died as people were carrying her there. I talked to her parents and sister in their village.
*Gbessey Kiadu, age 1, died of malaria because of his cuts to malaria medication in Liberia. I talked to his mom in her village.
*Ibrahim Koroma, an infant, died of AIDS in Sierra Leone after he interrupted HIV supplies. I talked to health workers who cared for him.
*Achol Deng was an 8-year-old girl with HIV in South Sudan who died when Musk cut funding for the health care worker who provided her medicines. I talked to the healthcare workers.
I could go on and on. In almost every village you go to in South Sudan, Uganda, Liberia, Sierra Leone or other countries I reported in, you find people dying because of aid cuts. I challenge Musk: Come with me on a reporting trip, and we'll talk to these moms and dads, and you'll see the dying children themselves. I think if you see the kids whose lives are at stake, maybe you'll change your mind.

Think about what it means to order the killing of your own soldiers in order to prevent them from becoming part of a prisoner exchange.
It means that Israeli officials consider it a higher priority to keep detaining Palestinian men, women, and children without charge than to release some in exchange for those soldiers.
That logic is so obviously inhumane that Israel officially ended the Hannibal Directive policy on paper, yet obviously kept it in practice, because we now have many different reports of it being implemented on October 7. And we also know that the bombing campaign was organized through 2023 and 2024 in a way that many Israeli officials understood to be highly likely to kill captives Israelis in Gaza, as +972 has exposed.

It called on the international community and the guarantor states of President Trumpโs ceasefire agreement to pressure Israel to halt its systematic attacks on police personnel and assets.

The problem isnโt a lack of money.
Itโs what we choose to fund.
The money we claim to spend protecting nature is dwarfed by the money we spend degrading it.

It doesnโt get more racist than this. Refugees are welcome as long as theyโre white.

President Donald Trump has issued a proclamation opening large sections of protected Pacific waters to commercial fishing, including parts of the Papahฤnaumokuฤkea Marine National Monument northwest of Hawaii.

Papahฤnaumokuฤkea is home to more than 7,000 species, including endangered Hawaiian monk seals, green sea turtles, humpback whales, sharks, and vibrant coral reefs. Scientists consider these marine national monuments as underwater ecological refuges that support healthy food webs and high biodiversity.
Critics warn that allowing commercial fishing could damage these fragile ecosystems through overfishing and trophic cascades, where the removal of large predators disrupts the entire food chain. Many Native Hawaiians also oppose the move, viewing Papahฤnaumokuฤkea as a sacred cultural and spiritual site.

Modern ships are extremely difficult for whales to avoid.
Large vessels often travel at 18โ22 knots (20โ25 mph). At those speeds, even a fin whale has very little time to react.
Ships also generate intense underwater noise and pressure waves that interfere with whalesโ ability to detect danger. Because whales rely heavily on sound, they may not recognize an approaching vessel until it is too late to avoid a collision.
That is why reducing ship speeds in critical whale habitats has been shown to dramatically reduce fatal collisions.

A pregnant endangered fin whale was found dead on the bow of a cruise ship in Seward, Alaska.
She was a 61-foot fin whale, the second-largest animal on Earth after the blue whale, and about six months pregnant.
A necropsy found blunt-force injuries consistent with a ship strike. She was carried into Seward on the bow of a cruise ship with nearly 5,000 people.
This wasnโt a freak accident.
Ship strikes are now the leading cause of death for fin whales.
The solution is simple: slow ships down. A 10-knot speed limit dramatically reduces the risk of fatal collisions, yet many cruise ships travel faster.
We built ships so large they can kill one of the biggest animals on Earth without anyone on board even noticing.
So why is slowing down still the exception instead of the rule?

In the majority opinion for the consolidated cases (Mullin v. Doe and Trump v. Miot), Justice Samuel Alito stated that federal law grants the executive branch unreviewable authority to terminate TPS designations, effectively barring federal judges from intervening or second-guessing those decisions. The conservative majority also rejected claims from immigrant advocacy groups that the administrationโs actions were unconstitutionally driven by racial animus.
Notably, Alito declined to reprint Trumpโs past remarks about Haitians while ruling they were not โovertly racial.โ In dissent, Justice Elena Kagan, joined by Sotomayor and Jackson, reproduced them herself, including Trumpโs claim that Haitians in Springfield, Ohio were โeating the petsโ and his description of Haiti as a โshithole country.โ The statements, Kagan wrote, โfairly shoutโ that race shaped the decision to expel them.
The decision takes effect in 32 days, barring narrow district court interventions. Affected Haitian and Syrian nationals will lose their legal residency, work authorization, and driverโs licenses, rendering them subject to detention and deportation. While this ruling targets Haiti and Syria, the precedent imperils roughly 1 million more TPS holders from countries including Afghanistan, Burma, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Honduras, Nepal, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen, all now in litigation.
The same State Department now clearing the path for deportations still lists both countries as โDo Not Travel,โ warning that โno part of Syria is safeโ and citing kidnapping, armed crime, and gang violence in Haiti, where more than 2,300 people have been killed this year and 1.5 million displaced.
Both designations exist because of catastrophes the US had a hand in, Syria through years of sanctions and military intervention, Haiti through a century of US occupation, support for dictators, and backing for the removal of its elected president.
Business groups warn of severe workforce disruptions, particularly in health care, elder care, and hospitality. Ohioโs Republican Governor Mike DeWine opposed the move, calling it a mistake that will batter local economies like Springfield, where an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 of the cityโs roughly 60,000 residents are Haitian.

The World Central Kitchen announced yesterday the complete suspension of its services in the city of Khan Younis and terminated the contracts of more than 150 cooks.
Every short period, it seems to announce a new suspension or the end of part of its operations, as if stability in providing aid no longer exists at all. The meals they provided were the only semi stable source of food for hundreds of thousands of families. Now, services have been halted by nearly 90% across Gaza City.
Today, while distributing water, we passed by one of the food kitchens that used to distribute meals. There was nothing left except a large pot of plain white rice, with no additions no sauce, no vegetables, not even a pinch of salt. I saw hundreds of people men, women, children, and elderly literally fighting over this small amount of rice. They pushed each other, stretched out their hands in desperation, their eyes hollow, and their faces pale.
I saw the anguish in their eyes. I saw the sadness weighing down every step. The world does not fully understand the scale of the tragedy here. Every time an aid organization stops or reduces its services, another part of life in Gaza dies.
My family and I used to benefit from these meals that were being provided, but for many months now we have not received a single meal. I say this not only as an individual case, but as a reflection of a reality that now includes thousands of families who have lost this essential source of food.
I swear to you that what we are living through cannot be described in words. People are not just hungry they are broken. They need more aid, not less. What they have endured is enough; the death that follows them every day is enough.
